Ethanol
Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, and grain alcohol, is a volatile, flammable liquid often used as motor fuel.
Pros:
- Potentially renewable, as it is derived from crops
- Less pollutant than gasoline
- Cuts down on smog-forming emissions as much as 50% (HybridCars.com)
Cons:
- Because of the nature of ethanol, its natural degradation to internal engine parts is inevitable – alcohol dissolves and erodes metals or gaskets
- Ethanol is created from corn, which has driven up the price of bread
- Farmers can’t export the excess of grains used in the production of ethanol, which causes the backbone of the United States, which is agriculture, to suffer
